Off track in North Wales

hill and vale 1, originally uploaded by Vertigogen.

There's a few places in Wales that can claim they are truly off the beaten rack and these tend to be en route to the more crowded obvious honeypots. For instance, travel from the North of England to Snowdonia via the busy A55 and you miss out on so much. This is North Wales Borderlands country and a little gem we discovered recently was the Clwydian Hills near Mold. This area is so quiet and so beautiful and yet so close to access the rest of North Wales. Escapism at its best and certainly off the beaten track in Wales. The Clwyidian Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a 35km stretch of low-lying limestone hills that offer a more relaxing laid-back alternative to the more dramatic Snowdonia National Park. Highly recommend this as a not-so-obvious getaway, and a great secluded place to stay that we stumbled across recently is Gwenoldy. Away from the main flow, over a hill, basically in the middle of nowhere. It feels like you have the whole landscape to yourself, and the truth is, you probably do!

Bryngarw Country Park and the Garw Valley

Jjust off the M4 near Bridgend, well worth a day out. Interesting sculptures, mature woodland, trails, events throughout the year and the gateway to the Garw Valley, certainly off the beaten track country. From Bryngarw Country Park you can cycle the Valley on a family cycle route that takes in the best of this little heard of yet stunning valley. Head towards Llangeinor and its historic settlement on the hill, overlooking the places that inspired the Welsh hymn Calon Lan, known to all Welsh people the world over! There is even a parc dedicated to the hymn at the top of the Valley in Blaengarw called Parc Calon Lan. Bryngarw Country Park surrounds the Bryngarw Country House which is great place to stay in this part of the world too!
